What we will cover
This four-day afternoon intensive course is designed to help Year 4 pupils enter Year 5 with a stronger foundation in English. Running from 1pm–3pm for a week in August, the course focuses on building confidence, accuracy and independence across writing, SPaG and comprehension.
Each afternoon begins with explicit teaching on a key skill that pupils need to secure before moving into Year 5. Across the course, pupils will work on descriptive writing, persuasive writing, challenging punctuation and comprehension across fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The writing sessions will focus on planning clearly, developing ideas, choosing precise vocabulary, structuring sentences accurately and writing with greater control.
Pupils will also strengthen important SPaG skills that children often find difficult, including comma splices, speech marks, colons and semicolons. These sessions will help pupils understand not just the rules, but how to apply them confidently in their own writing.
In the comprehension sessions, pupils will practise reading carefully, understanding vocabulary in context, making inferences, selecting relevant evidence and writing clear answers. They will learn how to approach different text types with greater precision and confidence.
In a small group, with individual support provided, I help pupils close common gaps, strengthen core English skills and develop the confidence needed to start Year 5 feeling prepared, capable and ready for the next stage.
