What we will cover
This four-morning intensive course is designed to prepare pupils for the English element of Stage 2 selective 11+ exams, with a particular focus on written responses, exam technique and standard-answer comprehension.
Each morning begins with explicit teaching on a writing style or skill commonly assessed in Stage 2 exams. Across the course, pupils will work on descriptive writing, discursive writing, persuasive writing and standard-answer comprehension. The writing sessions will focus on how to plan quickly, structure ideas clearly, adapt tone and style to the task, and write with accuracy, maturity and control under timed conditions. I use writing frameworks, model responses and carefully selected resources to help pupils understand what is expected of them.
Students will complete exam-style written tasks during the sessions and hand them in for marking after the lesson. Feedback will focus on the areas that make the biggest difference in Stage 2 exams: structure, vocabulary, sentence control, development of ideas, technical accuracy, clarity of expression and suitability for the task. In the comprehension session, pupils will practise reading precisely, selecting relevant evidence and writing clear, well-supported answers.
In a small group, with individual feedback provided, I help pupils develop the confidence, flexibility and exam-ready technique needed to approach Stage 2 English tasks with greater independence and control.
