Small online group. Individual feedback. High-impact results.

What we will cover

This four-morning intensive course is designed to prepare pupils for the English element of Stage 1 selective 11+ exams, including Sutton SET and Tiffins Stage 1.

Each morning, students will complete a timed Stage 1-style English paper or section before spending the second half of the session carefully dissecting the paper. The papers themselves are carefully designed, with texts selected to ensure exposure to a wide range of genres, helping pupils become comfortable with the variety they may encounter in the real exam. We will analyse the wording of the questions, identify common traps, review vocabulary in context, practise eliminating distractor answers and explore exactly how to locate the evidence needed for accurate responses.

The course focuses on the skills that make the biggest difference in multiple-choice English papers: speed, precision, inference, vocabulary, careful reading, answer-sheet accuracy and exam discipline. Rather than simply marking the paper, pupils will learn how to diagnose their mistakes, understand why the correct answers are correct, and apply clear strategies to future papers.

In a small group, with individual feedback provided, I help pupils develop the confidence, accuracy and exam-ready technique needed to approach Stage 1 English papers with greater independence and control.

  • Individual feedback

Every day, your child will hand in the questions we have discussed and completed during the session. I will provide individual feedback to ensure day-on-day improvements. Just hand the work in within half an hour of the session finishing.

  • Lesson Recordings

You will have access to the session recordings for seven days following the course. You can use these to revise, consolidate and embed learning.

  • Texts covered

We will look at a range of texts - fiction, non-fiction and poetry - to ensure a depth of understanding across all writing types. All texts are carefully chosen or written to be of 11+ selective standard.

What to expect

  • Expert teaching

As a teacher/ tutor with fifteen years of experience, I know not only what students need to know, but how to teach so that it is retained.

  • High-quality literature

I have carefully chosen or written a range of high-quality texts to ensure exposure to different writing styles and genres.

  • (Almost) Immediate feedback

In a one-week course, students need feedback quickly so that they can make changes and not let any mistakes become embedded. I will mark and return work the same day (if you submit within half an hour of each session finishing).
